Can you have speciality coffee iced?

In short- absolutely! Speciality coffee can wear many hats, and iced can be one of them. You’re always guaranteed a delicious taste in the cup, but do some roast styles suit iced more? Let’s dive right in!

Iced Coffee

Do you lose any flavours from speciality coffee when having it iced?

While traditionally, when you think of coffee, you think of a hot one- it doesn’t mean you are wrong for wanting it iced! Like all food-related things, it depends entirely on that person’s palette and preference. I, for one, can’t imagine drinking a mug of hot coffee during this heatwave, whereas our roaster Jordyn refuses ever to have his coffee iced, even if he’s standing at the bottom of a volcano.

However, there will, of course, be some flavours you won’t taste as much when it is iced. But again, this isn’t a negative thing! You may discover flavours you prefer when you ice your brew.

Coffee professionals even consider this and why cupping is so vital to the tasting process. When cupping a coffee, you don’t start the tasting process until the 12-minute mark, partly to give the flavours and aromas time to develop fully. You continue tasting until the coffee has cooled to slightly warmer than room temperature, as entirely different flavours can start to appear in the cup.

For the iced vanilla latte lover

The classic popular iced coffee drink that first comes to mind must be an iced vanilla latte. Growing in popularity every summer, this drink doesn’t need to be full of artificial syrups! If it’s a sweeter flavour you’re craving, try giving a lighter roast style a go!

Our yellow-labelled coffee is definitely something to scream and shout about when it comes to naturally sweet coffees. Whilst the name and origin may change, something you can always count on is that this will be a light and fruity roast style. This means you can expect a silky-smooth mouth feel with a bright and sweet fruity acidity.

This coffee is best when brewed in a cafetiere or filter, and if it’s an iced coffee you’re after, we have some tips and tricks! If you brew a big jug of filter or cafetiere, leave it in the fridge for 2-3 days and use it as your cold brew. Top it with milk, and you are good to go!
