Coffee Trends for 2020

We thought we’d have a deep Two Chimps Coffee dive into what we think will be the top coffee trends for 2020 and beyond.

With the coffee industry now leading the way in the UK, we predict that the next year could be one of the best yet for the coffee world. From online coffee subscriptionsto coffee shops selling many varieties of coffees, not to mention a large array of brewing methods; the popularity of coffee is still on the rise with more people wanting to know where their coffee has come from and how best to drink it.

Quick disclaimer…If you happen to come across this post in 2021 or beyond, please don’t hold us to any of the information below; our crystal ball may have been in need of a clean. Thanks! ?

Non-Dairy Milk

Non-dairy milk variations have become increasingly more popular over the last few years. Most local cafes will now have at least two offerings alongside cows milk. Soy, lactose-free, or almond milk are pretty common, but options like oat, cashew, rice, coconut, hazelnut, macadamia, and pea milk are now on the rise.

Sustainably Grown

With concerns for the Earth and global warming, coffee lovers have been seeking out coffee beans that have been sustainably grown (just like ours). This means that the coffee trees must be grown without causing deforestation, land or water erosion. The support of sustainable growers has been increasing steadily over the past few years, and there’s no doubt this will continue.

Nitro Coffee

This is a trend that is growing year by year. Nitro is a stored cold brew which is served on draft, like in a pub, or in cans. The coffee is infused with nitrogen gas to give it a smooth, creamy texture which is even tastier than a standard cold brew. In the last few years, Nitro Cold Brew has gained in popularity and is already served in cafes and bars around the world.

The Oat Flat White!

We had to mention it…The ‘trendy’ coffee shop drink of choice these days. The Oat milk adds a very different flavour and mouthfeel to cow’s milk and is fast becoming a coffee shop favourite. If you’ve not tried one yet, we highly recommended giving it a try. Nomnomnomnom

Making Espresso at home

More and more people are turning to brew their favourite coffee at home using their very own espresso machines. Learning how to use it, buying fresh coffee and making barista-quality coffee in your kitchen at home has been the route of choice for many during lockdown.

TikTok’s latest viral trend, the whipped Dalgona coffee (whipped coffee)

It was inspired by a Korean YouTuber who posted a now-viral video back in February 2020.

What is this, and how do I make it?!? There are many variations now, but the original from his video is 2tbsp of instant coffee (Sorry for swearing), 2 tbsp of sugar and 2 tbsp of hot water, whisk them all together until you get stiff peaks. You can drink either hot or cold; just fill your glass half full with milk and then add the whipped cream to the top. Yum Yum!

Our recipe is a little different to the original Dalgona Coffee Recipe; Ours uses real fresh coffee, and not just instant.

Disposable coffee cups disappearing forever

Coffee shops encouraging customers to bring a reusable cup and not offering any single-use paper or plastic cups is something which we’re all so used to. The migrating towards making the decision not to serve the drink unless a reusable cup can be used will be something we will see more of. Many have already done this, and many more will be following suit this year.

The end of Milk?

Contradicting on the non-dairy milk a little, but there could be a move away from milk in coffee. With Veganism and a desire to experience the taste of high-quality coffee on the rise, anything is possible. Lightly roasted coffee (just like ours) brings out many more flavours than if it was roasted longer and darker, and without the addition of milk, these are much easier to taste.

More creative Cocktails – YAY

The espresso martini has fast become a firm favourite at your local cocktail bar and has pretty much single-handedly created the ‘coffee cocktail’ drinks category. But what’s next – Nitro dispensed coffee cocktails, Black Russians, Coffee Negronis and many more…

Filter coffee now becoming more popular

In the US, filter coffee has been the norm for a long time. It’s not always been a favourite here in the UK but is back on the rise with many coffee shops now offering filter coffee as an alternative option to espresso-based drinks. Its rise in popularity is partially because it is very quick and easy for coffee shops to brew and serve.

Foam on demand

The most time-consuming aspect of making espresso-based drinks can be foaming the milk. It can be great fun, and there is definitely an art to it, but still, time-consuming. With some new machines, it’s now possible to create steamed milk without using a steam wand, making the whole process much faster for Baristas. They can simply fill their jug from the machine when required.

Quality Decaf Coffee

Decaffeinated coffee has often been seen as the devil by the speciality coffee scene. Processing methods were lacking in delicateness, and there hasn’t been many tasty decaf options on the market…until now that is. Try our newest Decaf coffee ‘ALONG CAME A TOOTHBRUSH’. It’s a Sparkling Water processed decaf coffee from Peru. A balanced, full-bodied decaf coffee with a cherry-like acidity. Notes of plum & chocolatey biscuits are prominent throughout. Love it.
