Single-origin and ethically sourced- but where from?

You’ve probably seen these words across our website and packaging, and while this gives you the basics on HOW we source our coffee, WHERE exactly do they come from?

If you’re an avid reader of our learning blog, you may have read a few of our coffee origin pieces, which give an in-depth look at each coffee origin. But let’s look at our current lineup, shall we?

Two Chimps Coffee Beans

Do we have a favourite origin?

In short- no, we don’t! We judge our brews purely by flavour, what programmes or movements those beans may support, and how fair the selling process is on the farmers.

For example, our current orange-labelled coffee, ‘What time will I grow up?’, was grown with support from the Café Delas programme. This movement empowers women farmers by offering opportunities, education, and a voice. This made these beans even tastier as they support such a vital programme!

One of the main reasons why we don’t favour one origin over another is because you can’t rely on the flavours tasting the same. This is why our coffees change semi-frequently: every harvest will produce a slightly different flavour than before. Less sunlight, rainfall and a change in fertilisers all affect the final taste in the cup. Therefore, even if we love the flavour from a particular farm one year if we re-sample them the following year, they may taste completely different.

However, we like how this helps keep our lineup fresh and exciting, as do our customers! We always keep the roast style and flavour notes similar for each coffee, allowing our coffee lovers to find their new favourites easily.

Where are our brews from right now?

We have 11 coffees sourced from across the coffee belt, and they range in roast styles from light & fruity to medium and medium dark. We never roast to a dark level; our beans are too beautiful to burn! Let’s start with Central America, where you’ll find our green, red and orange-labelled coffees.

Let’s begin in Guatemala at Unión Cantinil, where you will find the small farm that grew our medium green labelled roast, Freshly Knitted Bicycle. This silky-smooth milk chocolate brew has a warming sweetness of caramel and a pleasant fruity cherry and apple acidity at the end. Yum!

Moving south into El Salvador, you can find the small cooperative that grew our limited edition red-labelled coffee, Crannys Nook. Produced by El Borbollon Mill, this dark chocolate brew has a toffee nut sweetness and orange acidity. Find a subtle gingerbread in the aroma, too. Get in!

Finally, we find ourselves at the source of our orange-labelled coffee, What time will I grow up in Nicaragua! Sit back and enjoy this creamy, full-bodied coffee with swirls of chocolate and caramel. Perfect any time of the day (it’s our best seller for a reason!).

Now, let’s hop on a flight to Colombia to meet our next brews!

Our blue-labelled coffee, the Cat’s Ski Jacket is the ideal morning coffee, with a zing to zap you awake! Balanced by a smooth toffee and zesty lemon, this is bound to have you leaping into action.

Next up, one of our decafs! Sourced from a small cooperative in Lavado, these beans have been decaffeinated with a chemical-free sugarcane solution. Roasted to a medium level, 3 o ‘clock at night is creamy, nutty and malty with a subtle lemon acidity to finish. A decaf that tastes like the real deal? Yes, please!

Finally, let’s take a look at our must-try La Cabaña! This is one of our exclusive, extra-special coffees; we only have 110 bags available! We even handstamp each bag that leaves the roastery so you know your number.

This coffee boasts all those unique funky flavours from naturally processed coffee, as it has an additional 200-hour anaerobic fermentation period. With a light and floral feeling, you can expect a fresh strawberry and pink grapefruit fruitiness floating over a dreamy chocolate river.

Let’s make a pit stop in Brazil to visit the wonderful farm that grew our pink labelled Auntie Mary’s Green Canary! This coffee is that perfect all-rounder, with chocolate-coated hazelnuts and spiced fruit balanced by a crisp apple zing. Practically perfect in every way.

For the final part of our coffee journey, let’s head over to East Africa, Uganda, and Rwanda. Starting with our light & fruity yellow coffee, Smile at the Yawners (a personal favourite), this brew has a milk chocolate base, topped with the sweetness of cranberries, apples and bright acidity. We often describe this as a naturally sweet coffee that pairs perfectly with a biscuit on the side.

Our lilac-labelled decaf is from Uganda. The Daydream Continues is a light and fruity brew that is the perfect last drink to have curled up on the sofa watching a film. Decaffeinated using the sparkling water process, this buttery biscuit brew has chocolate, walnut and toffee notes. An awesome combination for an awesome decaf!

Last but not least is our limited-edition, white-labelled coffee in partnership with Project Waterfall. Tinsing a boo out was produced by Valentin Kamenyi in Akagera, Rwanda, and for every bag of this coffee sold, we are donating £1 to Project Waterfall. This charity is dedicated to improving the lives of coffee-growing communities by providing clean water, education, and sanitation.

This light and fruity brew has a clean mouthfeel with chocolate limes, raisin sweetness and a unique fruitiness you only get with naturally processed coffees. Somebody pop the kettle on already!

And there you have it! The origins of all our speciality coffees!

Phew that was quite a read. Anyone else need a coffee?

Meet the chimp behind this article!
Head Chimp founded Two Chimps alongside Laura in 2016 after being self-employed from the age of 21. He caught the coffee bug from using an at-home roaster, and the rest is history!

What Andy does outside of the treehouse:
When the weather’s nice, Andy loves going on bike rides with his trusty sidekick, microchimp Felix (who always leads the way, of course). Andy also enjoys spending time tending to the family’s vegetable garden, and looking after their at-home farmyard, which includes a cat, two guinea pigs, and six chickens!

Andy says…
“I believe every day is a school day, and I’m always looking for opportunities to stick my head in a book and absorb new knowledge. I also love a problem to solve and fix – there’s no such thing as problems, only solutions.”
