What is a Dirty Coffee, and is it worth trying?

Before we get started, let’s clear something up—don’t worry, you won’t be finding any dirt in your coffee! Today we’ll chat about what a dirty coffee actually is, why it came about, and what makes it so popular. Let’s get started!

Dirty Coffee

What is a dirty coffee?

If you’ve been a coffee lover for a while, you’ve probably seen the caffeinated world grow with all kinds of fun drinks like frappes, chai, cold brew, and yes, even ‘dirty’ coffees. So, what’s the scoop on dirty coffee?

Well, it’s pretty simple! A dirty coffee is just a double shot of espresso poured over cold milk.

But don’t let its straightforwardness fool you! This little creation has made its way into chai lattes and hot chocolates, adding a delicious twist to those beloved favourites.

Who invented it?

The origin of this drink is debated within the coffee industry, with several people claiming to be its creator. One story dates back to 2010, when a shop owner grabbed an iced latte on her way to work. However, by the time she got around to drinking it, the ice had melted and diluted the coffee. This also affected the mouthfeel, resulting in a watery and thin texture.

So, the next time she made it, she decided to use cold milk—no ice this time! She poured the espresso right on top, letting it gently settle into the milk. This way, all the delicious flavour and creamy texture stayed perfectly intact.

Where does the name come from?

It all comes down to appearance! When espresso is poured over the milk, it slowly infuses downward, creating a layer of coffee that rests on top of the milk, which inspired the name.

Why are cafes adding this to their regular line up?

With the increasing popularity of cold coffee options, it’s no surprise that cafes are expanding their menus. The “dirty coffee” is an excellent choice for those looking for something unique, allowing you to enjoy the simple combination of espresso and milk without the overpowering taste of artificial sweeteners.

What other ‘dirty’ coffee drinks can you get?

As mentioned earlier, there are many drinks today that use the term “dirty.” One popular example is the dirty chai, which includes a double shot of espresso. This drink is ideal for those who enjoy the flavour of spiced tea but also need an extra caffeine boost.

How can you make this drink at home?

Absolutely! All you need is some milk (whole milk is best for this drink!) and an espresso machine to whip this up in the comfort of your kitchen.

Just add a splash of cold milk to your glass, pour over a shot of espresso, and you’re all set to enjoy.

Top Tip: resist the urge to stir it with a spoon! The goal is to savour that rich coffee flavour first, and then let the sweet, creamy milk come in as a lovely aftertaste.

Now, what would be the perfect coffee to use…
