Ready at-home baristas? Let’s make a latte!

Have no fear. Our latte guide is here! Say goodbye to mediocre coffees and become a master in all things brewing! A secret not known by many is that coffees are all about proportions. From a flat white to a cappuccino, most classic drinks only contain three ingredients: coffee, water, and milk! And once you’ve mastered steaming milk- the world is your oyster! So, let’s get cracking!

Pouring milk into coffee mug

What is a latte?

Translating to ‘milk’ in Italian, it probably won’t surprise you that a latte has a large proportion of milk compared to coffee. Typically starting with a single shot espresso base, hot steamed milk is poured on top, topped with a little foam, and if you’re lucky, a nice bit of latte art. While we might not reach latte art levels today, we can certainly spill the beans on how to make a delicious, creamy latte to enjoy, hot or cold!

Do I need a fancy machine to create the perfect latte?

While a steaming wand is ideal for creating the perfect velvety texture we want in a latte, it’s not essential! Whether you use a milk frothing device, hand whisk or even shake it in a jar (yep- this actually works), you don’t need all the fancy bells and whistles to create an excellent taste in the cup.

The same goes for the coffee aspect. While it typically has an espresso base, you can always use a trusty cafetiere to create a delicious latte. You just have to adjust your proportions slightly.

How do I create latte art?

There are two things you need to make latte art:

  1. Silky milk
  2. Crema on top of your espresso

Without these, you won’t be able to make a blob on top, let alone some fancy latte art! But if you have this base and keep practising, you’ll be a professional soon enough!

Now, let’s make a latte!

  1. Brew a single espresso while you start to steam your milk. (fresh crema is best!)
  2. Steam your milk (follow our easy step-by-step guide), to a moderately aerated level.
  3. Tap any large bubbles out of the jug. A few light taps should do.
  4. Swirl your milk to keep it combined and silky smooth.
  5. Tilt your cup and aim for the deep part of your espresso.
  6. Pour close, then high and slow.
  7. Maintain that flow rate until your cup is full.

Want to give latte art a go? Let’s do it!

We are following the same steps as before, with just a couple of extra steps.

  1. Brew your espresso while you are steaming the milk.
  2. Pour close, then high and slow.
  3. Next, pour your milk around your cup in circular motions three times (or less if your cup is smaller than 10oz)
  4. After this, lower your jug and pour faster while straightening your cup as you reach the top.
  5. Lastly, push harder, add a gentle wiggle to your jug and lift to strike through!

Now, it’s time to sit back and enjoy the perfect latte! If you attempted any latte art, definitely give yourself a pat on the back! Even if you just had a white blob, you still created that separation of milk from coffee, so kudos to you!
