Can I Make Caramel Coffee at Home?

Yes, you can! Even Bob the Builder says so. Making Caramel Coffee at home is easy. We start by knocking up a lush caramel sauce for coffee (nowhere near as tricky as it sounds!), before adding it to milk and heating them in a saucepan. We then combine them with coffee, add a final swirl of sauce and bask in the golden glow of coffee paradise. Trust us, it’s a good place to be.

You’ll love how adaptable this Caramel Coffee recipe is. Get cosy with hot coffee or stay chilled with a lush Caramel Iced Coffee. Not sure which is your favourite? Make both.

Don’t worry if you haven’t got a coffee machine to make espresso. Simply make coffee in your favourite coffee device and tweak it so it’s stronger than usual. You can up the strength by brewing for longer or using more ground coffee.

Make Caramel Sauce for Coffee

Ooooh, swirly, sticky caramel sauce…

Yes, it’s sweet but it’s not like you’re eating it off the spoon. Oh wait, you are. (Us too!).

But stop spooning for a second. Combine your homemade caramel sauce with creamy frothed milk to create your best caramel latte. It’s tasty and toffee-ish sweet, drizzled generously with your own caramel sauce.

You can use shop-bought sauce or some Dulce de Leche instead, but making caramel sauce for coffee is way more satisfying. Really takes this coffee-making stuff to the next level, you know…

You’ll have some leftover sauce, which we recommend drizzling over warm blondies, using in a caramel iced coffee or, yes, spooning with a flourish into your awaiting mouth.

How long does Homemade Caramel Last?

Not long, if I’m about! You make your caramel sauce with cream, which means you need to use it up pretty sharpish. Store your homemade caramel in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to one week. You can freeze it, too. Just pop it in an airtight container and stash in the freezer for up to three months.

Can I make a caramel latte in the microwave?

You can also heat your latte milk in the microwave. Simply pour the milk into a sealable jar and shake as hard as you can for about 40 seconds, or until the milk is frothy. Remove the lid, then heat the milk in the microwave until steaming. Stir in your caramel and combine with the espresso. Easy-peasy!

Caramel Coffee Recipe

Ingredients

For the Caramel Sauce

  • 125g caster or granulated sugar
  • 75ml double cream
  • 25g butter

For the Coffee

Method

For the Caramel Sauce

  • Tip the sugar into a pan and add 2 tbsp water. Place over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and doesn’t feel grainy in the pan
  • Increase the heat and bubble for 4-5 mins until you reach a dark golden colour. Don’t stir – hold the pan by its handle and swirl it gently instead. If you’ve got a sugar thermometer, it should reach around 170°C. Take off the heat, then stir in the cream and butter. Careful – it’ll be hot!
  • Leave the sauce to cool

For the Coffee

  • Add the milk and 2 tbsp caramel to a saucepan and heat over medium heat until the milk is gently steaming and the caramel has dissolved
