Iced Mocha

What is a mocha?

This chocolate coffee fusion has become a popular drink amongst all coffee lovers worldwide, and is typically made from a shot of espresso, steamed milk and either chocolate syrup or a hot chocolate base.

Nowadays, many cafes add chocolate flakes or powder to their milk steaming jugs to create the chocolate aspect of this drink. They will then top it with an Americano coffee (espresso topped with hot water), which is what we’ve done with our invention! This way, you get a perfect creamy consistency, with just the right amount of sweet chocolate blending with a delicious full-bodied coffee. Yum!

Who invented the mocha?

The origins of this drink can be traced back to 18th-century Italy. It was called ‘bicerin’ and was made with coffee, cream, and chocolate. Initially, it was served in a small glass, with the components separated, and customers mixed it themselves. However, as its popularity grew, cafes started serving it as one complete drink. This led to the birth of the mocha, which quickly gained popularity across Europe and America and is now a staple on café menus.

Where does it get its name from?

This drink was named after a specific type of coffee bean shipped from the Al Mokka port in Yemen. This coffee was known for its naturally chocolatey flavour, something entirely new at the time. However, the chocolate flavour nowadays comes from added chocolate syrup, flakes or a dash of hot chocolate rather than the coffee beans themselves.

Enough with the history, it’s time to create our own (iced edition)!
