Make a Starbucks Peppermint Mocha at home with this simple step-by-step recipe!

The Starbucks Peppermint Mocha is a festive fave. We get it. It’s creamy. It’s minty. It’s chocolatey. It’s kinda yummy-y…

But you can make a BETTER Peppermint Mocha at home! Grab yourself some coffee and a bag of Two Chimps real hot chocolate flakes (they’re delish). A sofa and blanket are preferable. Cream is non-negotiable.

And let’s go!

What is a Peppermint Mocha?

What’s going on in this merrily minty Christmas drink? Order a Starbucks Peppermint Mocha, and you get a chocolatey coffee made with mocha sauce (not real chocolate, fyi) and peppermint-flavoured syrup. It’ll be topped with creamy and sprinkles, and probably served in a single-use cup. It’s nice (other than the single-use bit), but not nice nice. Not like the homemade Peppermint Mocha you’re gonna make!

Peppermint Mocha Ingredients

A handful of ingredients is all you need to make a Starbucks Peppermint Mocha! Which is good news when the Christmas shopping list is already longer than your stocking.

The premium hot chocolate flakes are the star of the show. Unlike powdered hot choc, our dreamy hot choc is made with 71% cocoa flakes of real chocolate. This is the real deal, folks! Not like that mocha sauce stuff.

Milk comes next. For true mocha mastery, we recommend whole milk rather than semi-skimmed. Dairy free? Try oat milk for a creamy consistency.

Then all you need is good quality Peppermint Extract and you’re on your way to your best ever Crimbo drink! The cream and sprinkles are optional, or course, but highly recommend.

Actually, scratch that, they are totally essential! It’s Christmas, after all!

Can you make Starbucks Christmas drinks at Home?

Sure, you can! Homemade Starbucks Christmas drinks are simple to make and ludicrously tasty! The perfect way to get your festive drink fix without queuing in the cold.

Using real hot chocolate flakes rather than syrup or sauce guarantees next-level chocolate flavour. Imagine a rich, deep oasis of devilish deliciousness, and you’re on the right lines!

Homemade Peppermint Mocha Variations

Make mocha your way with a few simple tweaks. Because trying to explain adaptations to the Starbucks barista is a nightmare

Fancy a mocha that’s punchier on the coffee front? Simply add a little more coffee to your mug or reduce the milk measurement. Want more minty madness? Up the amount of extract to one teaspoon. Or maybe you fancy an insanely chocolatey mocha? Just use 30-40g hot chocolate flakes instead.

You can also make your hot chocolate on an espresso machine rather than in a pan. Find a guide for that right here!

Here’s the adults-only bit… a tipsy Peppermint Mocha! Just add a dash of Irish Cream or minty Crème de menthe to the heated milk it. Ooooh… go on! 🍸

  • Double shot espresso or approx. 60ml strongly brewed coffee
  • 20g Two Chimps Hot Chocolate Flakes
  • 250ml whole milk or non-dairy alternative
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • Whipped cream, chocolate sauce and sprinkles, to decorate
  • A large mug

  1. Make your espresso or strongly brewed coffee and pour it into your mug
  2. Pour the milk into a pan and add the Two Chimps Hot Chocolate Flakes. Pop it over a medium heat and heat until the chocolate flakes have melted, and the milk is nice and warm. Whisk regularly.
  3. Stir the peppermint extract into the chocolatey milk.
  4. Slowly pour the milk into the mug, finishing with the foam.
  5. Top with cream, chocolate sauce and sprinkles. Stir before enjoying!
