Seasonal Coffee Trends to look out for in Autumn 2024

It’s that time of year again when we can enjoy all those beautiful colours autumn brings, and finally embrace all those wonderful seasonal flavours. One trend you will see returning is the cosy flavours of seasonal coffees, from pumpkin spice to peppermint; let’s look at what to expect this year!

Autumn Coffee Spices

1. Pumpkin Spice

Starting with the most obvious seasonal flavour, pumpkin spice is back in full force this Autumn. Out of all the spiced drinks which come about in October each year, this trend remains strong year after year, and for good reason! I must admit, I was a pumpkin hater. I’m just not a fan of the sweet vegetables and squash families. However, something about pumpkin spice hits the spot and gives you everything you crave on a brisk Autumn morning.

2. Chai Latte

When it comes to autumn drinks, a chai latte is a must. I like to call it “Christmas in a cup” because the blend of warming spices reminds me of all the delicious treats and baked goods we enjoy in December. You always see it returning to café menus and stores around this time of year, which gives it even more of an Autumnal association.

However, this is technically a tea, so if you want a coffee-based drink, add a shot of espresso to make what’s called a ‘dirty chai’. This adds that perfect swirl of coffee tang and a nice caffeine kick if that’s what you need!

3. Peppermint & Gingerbread

Now that we have a few drinks, what else can you bring to your menu to keep on trend? Introducing two flavours which are a must in 2024: Peppermint and Gingerbread.

Peppermint is another traditional taste that stems from the flavours you get in a Christmas candy cane, and every year; it has crept into the Autumn line-up. Whether a peppermint mocha or hot chocolate, it offers something different from the classic spiced option and adds something still festive to your menu!

While gingerbread men are available all year round and are a familiar weekend treat, this is a must-have flavour in the upcoming months. This dates back to when gingerbread was a delicacy reserved for special occasions and often graced the court of Queen Elizabeth I in the 16th century. Today, its warming flavours have made it a stable flavour in Autumn and Winter; from bakes to hot chocolates and coffee, it is undoubtedly an all-around winner and worth a go this year!

4. Brown Sugar Cinnamon

This last one is a bit of a wild card. Slightly different to the emerging maple caramel and pecan trend, a brown sugar cinnamon latte is the perfect way to treat those who love their coffee without too much faff. Originating from stores across America and Europe, this offers a sweet twist on a classic coffee flavour and keeps those incredible flavours of speciality coffee intact.

What exactly is a brown sugar cinnamon coffee I hear you say? Well, it’s simply what it says on the tin! You can create this flavour by adding cinnamon to brown sugar and then adding it to a latte. Topped with a bit of cream and a little sprinkle of the mixture, it’s also great in hot chocolate!

To make things even easier, here’s a simple recipe for making a delicious syrup: Combine 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup water, 1 and ½ teaspoons of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla in a saucepan. Heat the mixture on a medium level until the sugar has dissolved. Then, stir in the cinnamon and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes until it thickens. Once done, remove it from the heat, stir in the vanilla extract, and transfer it to a heatproof, sealable container. This syrup can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 weeks.
