The Crown Inn is situated in the middle of Uppinghams bustling market town. This charming traditional pub is on the main high street surrounded by local independent businesses. It dates back to 1739 and is full of character. Apparently, two ghosts can often be seen standing at the bar!

The Crown predominantly serves Everard’s beer but does have other choices too.

Founded in 1849, Everard’s Brewery is a family run business based in Leicester and serves over 175 pubs in the East Midlands.

What’s new

They recently founded a scheme called Project William, which was set up to allow smaller brewers to run a pub without needing such a large investment.

Everards owns the building which is then refurbished ready for a new owner to run the business with the aim of making it a success.

As a result, this partnership means that the pub doesn’t have to close. A new landlady or landlord can run the pub without having to purchase it.

Through this scheme, they’ve managed to save 31 pubs from closing. This is exactly what Laura Totten is about to do! Laura used to work for Everard’s on the Project William team. This is how she found out about The Crown in the first place.

How it all began

Firstly, Laura started her Landlady journey in a time where a one-metre distancing rule, 40-person limit and having a Covid-19 policy in place are mandatory. However, it hasn’t stopped her determination!

Laura says “A wise woman once told me, life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.

As a result, The Crown is newly refurbished with a freshly sanded bar, new flooring AND a whole new USP, the Crown boasts sustainability and community.

In addition, Laura has sent the current chairs off to a local interior designer for some upcycling. And, she’s also testing out plant-based takeaway packaging from Vegware and of course, using local independent producers.

Love Local

Laura says “I have been overwhelmed by the warm welcome, well wishes and support of the businesses and community of Uppingham. I am really pleased to be working with some of the great local producers of Rutland: Bisbrooke Artisans who produce the most awesome sourdough pizza bases ever. Rutland’s finest gin producer (with the best name) Multum Gin Parvo. AND the most wonderful Two Chimps Coffee, fuelling the troops with great tasting and responsibly sourced coffee.”

So, it all began when Laura contacted us back in March as she wanted to use a local coffee roastery. Lots of people had recommended her to get in contact with us.

Above all, her mindset is the same as ours. Coffee is usually the last drink that you have as part of a meal and this, therefore, means she wants the coffee to be as good as the meal and to be the last thing the customer remembers. Because we hand roast our speciality coffee multiple times each week, each order that Laura receives is freshly roasted to order. Which means, in turn, her customers are getting the freshest coffee possible too.
